Teamwork at Kai Time Poster (A2 & A3) - Schools and clinics
Teamwork at Kai Time Poster
Create calm, supportive kai times through a clear and respectful partnership between kaiako and tamariki.
Grounded in evidence-informed responsive-feeding principles, this poster offers kura a positive way forward. Kaiako provide structure and create a safe, predictable eating environment. Tamariki are supported to notice their hunger, fullness and changing appetites. They decide whether to eat, what to choose from the kai available, how much to eat and the order in which they eat it.
We are always learning. As our understanding of tamariki and eating grows, we now recognise that some familiar, well-intentioned practices can send confusing messages about kai. These may include asking tamariki to eat certain foods first or describing foods as “good,” “bad,” “healthy” or “treats.”
Every lunchbox tells a different story. It may reflect culture, food access, cost, time, whānau preferences, allergies, sensory needs or simply what was available that day. Using neutral and curious language helps every tamaiti and whānau feel respected, whatever their lunchbox contains.
Whether kai is provided by the kura, brought from home or both, all foods can be discussed without judgement. This includes packaged foods and foods containing chocolate.
This poster provides a simple visual reminder that helps kaiako continue learning and create kai times that support body trust, confidence and a positive relationship with food.
