The Opportunity: Building Positive Food Experiences in the Classroom and Kura

As both a New Zealand Registered Dietitian and a former Health, Home Economics, and Food Technology teacher, I see nutrition education through both a clinical and educational lens. Traditional nutrition education is often outdated, failing to support how young minds actually learn.

To modernise our approach, we must align learning with the cognitive development of our tamariki:

  • Move Beyond Rigid Categories: Young minds thrive when we drop abstract labels like "healthy vs. unhealthy," "everyday vs. sometimes," or "good vs. bad."

  • Drop the Abstract Science: Tamariki do not need to be burdened with complex clinical data, like learning that a carrot contains Vitamin A, or checking food labels.

  • Focus on Inclusivity: Shifting our focus away from single nutrients like sugar or fat helps children feel confident, calm, and happy about their lunchboxes.

  • Protect Older Tamariki: If we do not get this right while children are still concrete thinkers, teaching abstract food facts later in life can easily become a recipe for anxiety, confusion, and a strained relationship with food.

Embracing the Division of Responsibility (DOR)

This positive environment relies entirely on the Division of Responsibility (DOR) framework. In practice, this means we meet families exactly where they are:

  • We trust the adults (whānau) to provide the food: We understand that busy families face different realities, and many rely on convenient, shelf-stable packet foods. Whether lunchboxes contain fresh items or solely packaged foods, we respect their role. We know teachers are often caught in the middle of these food pressures, but you can manage this beautifully by shifting your role from food monitor to advocate, using this very framework to gently educate families and take the pressure off everyone.

  • We trust the tamariki to decide: Children decide how much and whether to eat from what is provided.

By creating a relaxed, supportive environment during eating times that honours this division, rather than monitoring, judging, or policing packet foods, we remove stress for whānau, make every child feel included, and empower tamariki to trust their own bodies.

Real-World Health Literacy

Tamariki build true, lifelong health literacy through a rich bank of positive, real-world experiences, not external rules or sorting worksheets. True health literacy starts with concrete things they can actually see, touch, smell, and feel, supporting a natural, positive appetite for life.

The Solution: A Holistic, Experience-Based Resource Grounded in Te Whare Tapa Whā

Join Kai the Kiwi and his friend Tiki the Tūī on a heartwarming journey that looks at all the beautifully diverse ways food is important for health, stretching far beyond mere nutrients and filling tummies.

Instead of restrictive rules, sorting foods, or clinical lunchbox checking, this interactive resource embraces a holistic, Hauora-centred approach grounded in Te Whare Tapa Whā. Designed by a New Zealand Registered Dietitian, this 52-page storybook completely moves away from traditional nutrition. Instead, it serves as an uplifting conversational launchpad for hands-on food experiences, giving children the rich, varied foundation they need to build true body trust and safe, intuitive health literacy for life.

Bring the Experience to Life: While the book provides the core visual themes and learning, it truly comes to life through interactive lesson plans or units based on hands-on experiences. This might mean sharing kai together, cooking in the classroom, getting curious about family recipes, or growing vegetables in the garden.

Curriculum Integration and Holistic Wellbeing

This resource directly supports the Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area of the New Zealand Curriculum, using the framework of Te Whare Tapa Whā to explore health through concrete, lived experiences.

With recent government curriculum updates, we acknowledge that not all schools and kura may choose to retain this specific model. However, drawing on my dual experience as both a health professional and a former teacher, I firmly believe that this holistic framework remains the absolute best, most intuitive way to teach health and wellbeing to tamariki.

By looking at wellbeing through these four foundational walls, we can guide students through highly relatable, real-world concepts:

  • Taha Tinana (Physical Health): Moving away from abstract chemical tracking to focus on tangible, physical experiences—how food gives us the practical energy to run, play, build strong bodies, and heal.

  • Taha Hinengaro (Mental and Emotional Health): Giving students a concrete vocabulary to identify what their tummy is telling them right now, replacing external rules with internal body trust. This section highlights how regular, nourishing food physically stabilises our energy, supporting the brain and body to process big feelings and navigate daily emotions calmly.

  • Taha Whānau (Social Health): Grounding health in the lived experience of whanaungatanga—sharing food, celebrating culture, and building strong, supportive bonds within the classroom and community.

  • Taha Wairua (Spiritual Health and Identity): Honouring how food connects us to our environment (taiao), our heritage (whakapapa), our senses (ngā rongo), and our unique inner essence (mauri).
