GO, GROW, GLOW Poster A2 & A3) - Schools and clinics
Kai’s Go, Grow & Glow Foods
Recommended for Years 5–8—with a Strong Fit for Years 6–7
From Food Experiences to Nutrition Science
Younger children learn about kai through concrete experiences—looking, smelling, touching, preparing, sharing and noticing what food helps them do.
As learners get older, they become ready to explore more abstract questions: Where does energy come from? How does the body grow and repair itself? What do carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and fibre actually do?
Created by New Zealand Registered Dietitian Kendall North, Kai’s Go, Grow & Glow Foods provides a memorable bridge into these more complex nutrition concepts:
GO: Carbohydrate and other sources of energy help the brain and tinana move, play and learn.
GROW: Protein and other nutrients help build, maintain and repair muscles, bones and cells.
GLOW: Vitamins, minerals, fibre and other nutrients support digestion, immunity and normal body functioning.
A Starting Point—not a Rigid Food System
Foods do not always fit neatly into one category. Many contain several nutrients and perform more than one role. Mixed meals bring Go, Grow and Glow foods together.
This makes the poster especially valuable for older learners. Students can use its simple framework before investigating where categories overlap, how foods work together and what the model leaves out.
The goal is not to classify every food perfectly. It is to understand that different foods contribute different things—and that variety helps the body get what it needs.
Why This Belongs in Your School, Kura or Clinic
Bridges concrete and abstract learning: Connects familiar foods with nutrients and processes occurring inside the body.
Makes nutrition approachable: Introduces energy, growth, repair, digestion and immunity through three memorable functions.
Builds critical thinking: Encourages students to investigate overlap rather than treating the categories as fixed rules.
Supports curriculum learning: Creates links with food and nutrition, health, science, body systems, cooking and food technology.
Moves beyond “good” and “bad” foods: Focuses on what food contributes without prescribing a perfect plate.
Creates a shared language: Gives learners, teachers, whānau and health professionals an accessible way to discuss nutrition.
